Fitting instructions for the Sleep Coach’s Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece.
- Preliminary fitting instructions:
Place the unfitted mouthpiece in your mouth with the holding tab pointing away from your face. The top is marked on the tab. This indicates the upper half of the mouthpiece. The lower half
has a longer inner surface.
- You will notice that, with your mouthpiece in place, your lower jaw will be held slightly forward. This is the most important part of the fitting process. Your lower jaw must be in a slightly forward position to allow your airway to
open.
- Practice the custom fitting procedure in the following steps with cold water using an accurate time for 10 seconds, just as you would if the water were hot.
- Custom Fitting Your Mouthpiece:
Boil at least 12 ounces of water in a container deep enough to completely submerge the mouthpiece except for the holding tab. Heat the water on a stove or in a microwave until it boils
vigorously. Do not put the mouthpiece in the water while the water is boiling.
- Remove the boiling water from the heat source.
- Gripping the holding tab with a pair of tongs, dip your mouthpiece in the hot water for exactly 10 seconds to soften the plastic. Remove mouthpiece from hot water, gently shake off excess water.
- While looking into a mirror, open your mouth wide, carefully place the softened mouthpiece into your mouth top side up, over the bottom teeth first, then lower your upper teeth into the top channel feeling with your tongue to make sure
your teeth slip into the channels of the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece will feel warm, but it will not burn you.
- As you position your lower jaw about halfway back from the most forward position, bite down firmly and suck out all the air in your mouth while pushing alternately with your tongue against the lower and upper inside front surface as
you did in the practice run.
- While doing the above, press on the outside of your lips and cheeks with your fingers to get a tight fit against your teeth.
- When your mouthpiece has cooled, take it out of your mouth and dip it into a glass of cold water for about 15 seconds to set the custom shape.
- Place the mouthpiece back into your mouth to evaluate the fit. You want to feel your lower jaw being held in a comfortable forward position. If you are not happy, repeat the fitting procedure.
- Most people can fix an uncomfortable fit by molding a second time. However, you may remold the mouthpiece up to 3 times. If you determine a remold is necessary, only re-heat for 8 seconds rather than 10.
- Remove the holding tab by cutting it off with scissors as close to the mouthpiece as you can. If a sharp edge remains, slightly heat a metal spoon over a flame and roll the sharp surface with the spoon (do not drag the spoon).
- If you don't stop snoring completely, remold with your jaw extended a little further forward, but not at maximum extension.
- It will take you a couple of weeks to get used to wearing the mouthpiece as it is a foreign object in your mouth. The first couple of nights you will only use it for part of the night. Each night you will get more used to it. For some
people it is a little challenging, but stick with it for a couple weeks and you will be glad you did.
Reshaping Your Mouthpiece:
Yes, you can reshape your mouthpiece up to three times. If you notice that your snoring returns after using the mouthpiece for 3 or more months, it is time to order a new one. You may be able to extend the life of your old mouthpiece
for a few weeks while you await delivery of your new one by reshaping it. Follow the steps above to
perform the reshaping. If you determine a remold is necessary, only re-heat the mouthpiece in the hot water for 8 seconds rather than 10.
